In simplest terms, a podcast is an audio or video program that is distributed over the internet and made available for download.

Unlike fixed media channels (for example television) listeners have 100% control over what content they download and also where and when they listen to or watch it.

Despite its name, a podcast may be played through a variety of audio programs and hardware devices and is not limited to the iPod brand products alone. Instead listeners use a variety of technologies including devices such as mp3 players, mobile phones and desktop computers.

The great thing about Podcasts is that they are always created by people who are passionate and excited about the topic. They may be every day people right through to industry professionals and topical experts. If you can’t find the Podcast you want, then maybe it is up to you to start it?

There are two common ways to listen to a podcast. Firstly, you can listen directly from the website by clicking on the audio control buttons within each episodes posting.

The most popular way is to use an aggregator such as iTunes which allows you to subscribe to the ‘feed’ of the Podcast or Blog. Each time a new post or episode is published you will be notified and able to download it. This means you don’t need to visit the site directly to source new content, but simply have it delivered to you as it becomes available. Every podcast that is a part of the Content Alliance has one click iTunes subscription buttons on their website.

Below is a video demonstration of how simple it is to subscribe to a feed manually using iTunes and Juice.

iTunes can be downloaded here.

The most important key you need to create a podcast is good content. Listeners are attracted to, and become subscribers, when you provide something they want to hear. It is not great production or having the best equipment that makes your podcast popular, it is the content you provide in every episode.

If you already have the concept for your podcast, the next 2 key elements you need are a microphone and a means to record.

The Content Alliance recommends using the Samson C01U condenser microphone. It is a USB microphone that comes with a software based pre-amp, so no additional hardware is required. You simply just plug it into your computer and you are ready to go.

For software we recommend GarageBand on the Macintosh OSX platform, and Castblaster for Windows based PCs. If you are not comfortable with either of these there are plenty of alternatives, most free, available for download.

Once you have this all setup it now comes down to recording your podcast and becoming comfortable with using the software and eventually exporting the MP3 file ready for broadcasting.

Now that you have the MP3 file, you need to setup a podcast feed to allow for listeners to download and subscribe. If you would like one of our established podcasters from the Content Alliance to assist you with this part of those process, send an email to getstarted@thecontentalliance.com.
